Mister J started as an idea I was toying with after watching how Gotham the TV series introduced Jerome Valeska who is rumored to be the very inspiration of how the Joker came about. I took this opportunity to collaborate with other talented artist like Demi Kay Schlehofer who did both the make-up and hair, Sam Ives who was casted as my model for Mister J and Oscar De La O Tailor Shop who helped recreated the whole outfit that was an inspiration of heath Ledger's Joker from The Dark Knight.
From Christmas to Chicago
This was the time I was feeling homesick, because it was my second Christmas away from my family back in Singapore and I was wandering around the city and I stumble upon this unique twist of strangers and the streets of Chicago during Christmas week.
Each frame has a reflecton of what was missing here in Chicago for me as well as what was keeping me afloat for being so far away. Just like a candle's flame burning ever so bright to keep the darkness at bay.
Absence of the Forbidden Fruit
In my work I explored the idea of what would normal day society be like if they don’t know shame because of how Adam and Eve didn’t take the forbidden apple from the tree and lived their lives like every other living thing that walk on this earth. Based on my first series where I photograph individuals in their personal space, I decided to apply the question what fashion would be like.
I worked with body painting my models as well as staging the backdrop to accommodate the character that my models wanted to portray as. Each person had to think about how he or she sees himself or herself in this alternate world and what would they like to become. Painting their bodies took me roughly around 30 minutes to an hour where I just picture how I want each character to look and to be sure they look differently from the each other.
The experience during this journey taught me about patience. I was able to look the human body in many different ways behind the lens. The subtle difference in one’s body paint can make a person be represented differently. It has also allowed me to be more aware of what the human body can do and how body language can play an important part when telling about a person’s story.
